What Is a Panchang?
Before any important action — starting a business, making a journey, performing a ceremony, signing a contract — Hindu and Jain traditions consult the Panchang. Today, these calculations are available instantly for your precise location.
The Five Limbs (Pancha Anga)
The lunar day — the angular relationship between Sun and Moon advancing 12° per Tithi. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month. The Tithi determines the quality of activity: Pratipad for new beginnings, Purnima for fulfilment, Amavasya for ancestor rites.
The day of the week, each ruled by a planet: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn). Each Vara carries the energy of its ruling planet — use it for appropriate activities.
The lunar mansion — one of 27 divisions of the zodiac each spanning 13°20'. The Moon's nakshatra on any day determines its emotional quality. Pushya is universally auspicious; Mula is inauspicious for new starts; Rohini brings fertility and growth.
One of 27 Yogas formed by the combined longitude of Sun + Moon. Vishkambha and Parigha are inauspicious; Siddhi, Shubha, and Amrita are highly auspicious. The Yoga determines the overall quality of activities started on that day.
Half of a Tithi — approximately 6 hours. There are 11 Karanas (4 fixed, 7 repeating). The Karana rules activity suitability within a half-day. Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, and Vanija are auspicious. Vishti (Bhadra) is strictly avoided for new starts.
